Pompeii (2)

Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993)

We're still held back in Positano, and this morning we learned that this island, yes, this one (picture taken from our hotel room)...

...was once owned by Rudolf Nureyev, the Russian ballet dancer, who lived there...and we suddenly remember, having read Gore Vidal's memoir...Vidal mentions that he could see the island from his villa, and that Nureyev used to come over for dinner to tell tall, yet true stories about gay saunas...

He was one of the most important ballet dancers of the 20th century. First man with the Bolshoi (under communism), escaped during a tournée through western Europe, and worked for the Royal Ballet in London, I believe. Died of AIDS in 1993.

Nureyev was well known to visit gay bathhouses in New York City and indulged in gay sex with well endowed men, he especially sought out black men. Nureyev would regale friends and acquaint about his sexual liaisons in the bathhouses.
Nureyev and Vidal were social acquaintances only, as they were in the same New York City social circles in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

But they (Nureyev and Vidal) were also neighbors on the Amalfi coast in Italy (N. owning an island off Portofino, and V. living in San Michele, the next town to the east of Portofino). And Vidal has amusing comments in his first "Memoirs" on Nereyev coming over for a drink and relating his most recent exploits in the bath houses. HIs first memoirs are very good (haven't read the second ones).
